Let’s be honest… we all know worksheets aren’t the most effective way to practice math. Students who struggle typically zone out, ball it up, and throw in the trash can. Students draw one problem, take it to their desk, solve it, and bring it back to check. Hack #3: Instant Grudgeball: Make a boxed area on your front white-board with space for each group or team in your class. Place 4 sticky notes in each team’s box. Each sticky note is worth one point. Pass out the worksheet to students and encourage them to work in their teams to solve one problem at a time together. Each time a group finishes a problem (make sure to check that all team members have the same answers on their paper), check their answer and if it’s right they get to steal a sticky note from any other team’s box and move it into their box. The more problems teams finish, the more sticky notes they can steal from others creating more than a few “grudges” in the class.

Formatting Matters

One of the most overlooked aspects of a good worksheet is whitespace. So many textbooks and online generators cram 30 algebra problems onto a single page. There is barely enough room to write an equals sign, let alone show the four steps required to solve an equation with variables on both sides.
